BUCKIE Ladies got their defence of the League Cup off to the best of starts with a hard-fought win over Sutherland.

There was added spice to the long trip to Helmsdale for the visitors as Sutherland snatched a win to put a dampener on Buckie’s first game of the season at Gordon Park.

A brace by Lori Lappin was enough to ensure all three points in the new group qualifier stage format of the competition. Lappin opened Buckie’s account with a fine effort before Sutherland levelled the score thanks to a screamer from Rhiann Sutherland that left the Buckie keeper with no chance.

However, Lappin struck again to put Buckie back in the driving seat before half-time.

The second half of what was a tough, physical match saw the hosts press for an equaliser with the Buckie defence proving more than equal to the task of seeing out the game.

Buckie Ladies manager Laura Duncan was left delighted with her side’s performance.

She said: “Sutherland had a really strong squad out so this counts as a great win for us.

“It’s definitely given us a huge confidence boost.”

It is back to league business for the champions this coming Sunday when they head to Nairn. Follow Buckie Ladies’ Facebook page for more match news and updates.
